Sector Insights

To ensure a well-rounded understanding of the live music sector’s needs, IMEMS conducted an extensive consultation process through interviews, workshops, and event-based discussions across Europe. In partnership with Ekhoscènes and other organizations like LiveDMA, LiveEurope, and Pearle*, we gathered insights from a wide range of professionals—festival organizers, promoters, venue operators, and tech innovators.

We also consulted experts in sustainability, AI ethics, and cultural innovation, ensuring our findings reflect both operational realities and broader systemic concerns. All interviews covered the entire live music value chain, from artistic creation to administration and audience engagement.

Our work is grounded in the values of fairness, inclusivity, and sustainability, echoing frameworks like LiveDMA’s 13 Guiding Principles for Fair Practice—a foundation for responsible AI development in live music.

This multi-faceted consultation strategy allowed us to map a wide spectrum of insights, concerns, and opportunities that informed our analysis and recommendations.

Needs & Challenges in the Live Music Sector

Through extensive consultation, IMEMS identified six key categories of needs for AI integration in live music:

1. FUNCTIONAL NEEDS BY ROLE: From artistic programming to administration, professionals seek tools to streamline workflows, automate tasks, and enhance audience engagement.

2. CROSS-FUNCTIONAL INTEGRATION: There's a critical need for interoperable, centralized systems to reduce fragmentation across platforms used for ticketing, marketing, and production.

3. PROJECT INTELLIGENCE & MONITORING Stakeholders want comprehensive dashboards that integrate live performance data with streaming and audience insights for better decision-making.

4. PRODUCTIVITY & TIME MANAGEMENT: AI can relieve operational pressures by automating repetitive tasks, allowing more time for creativity and innovation.

5. CREATIVITY, EXPEERIENCE & ACCESSIBILITY:: AI offers potential to democratize creative tools, making immersive technologies more accessible to smaller venues and independent artists.

6. SUSTAINABILITY: Though still emerging, AI could support resource optimization and environmental impact tracking, with room for further development.

These findings highlight the need for pilot projects and cross-sector collaboration to develop, test, and scale effective AI solutions tailored to the live music ecosystem.
